How to bifurcate the vaccine conversation, once and for all

It was a grandstanding, not a hearing.

Most Senators couldn’t hear RFK Jr.’s answers to their questions about whether or not he supported vaccines. I did enjoy Elizabeth Warren’s and Bernie Sanders’ temper tantrums.

I particularly appreciated Senator Ron Johnson and Senator Rand Paul. Thank you.

While RFK Jr. frequently says he is “pro-vaccine,” he has more accurately stated he’ll support vaccines “when they are safe.” I know people are upset that he said he was “pro-vaccine” in the Senate hearings and that he said he “supported the children’s vaccine schedule.”

I think RFK Jr. should have bifurcated the vaccine conversation. I’ll show you how.

We have the next four years to make a difference, with the momentum of the MAHA movement. We all need to have successful vaccine conversations, so this is not just for RFK Jr. It is for you and everyone you want to be successful as well.

Here’s a preview of what to say:

I’m going to join you in presuming the benefits and efficacy of vaccines, but you have to meet me halfway and agree that we need to ensure the vaccines are safe. I’m not going to discuss the benefits again until you understand the harms.

Ahem, forward this.

“The” Vaccine Conversation

It’s always the same.

Someone asks if you are anti-vaccine.

You say something about the harms of vaccines.

The other person now has deaf ears for the rest of your conversation.

90% of the time their face becomes distraught, then they shriek, “What about polio!?”

Translation: “Vaccines eradicated polio because everyone got polio vaccines. Your questioning of the safety might make people not want to get vaccines.”

You’re thinking, what does polio eradication have to do with the topic of vaccines causing harm?

They’re thinking, this anti-vaxxer wants to bring back polio and kill everyone!

You can’t launch into what you know about the current polio vaccine, which does not prevent transmission, but was designed only to protect the recipient’s own nervous system should they get polio.

You can’t talk about how the definition of polio was changed to make it more difficult to diagnose polio after the vaccine came out.

You can’t talk about the fact that polio cases track levels of DDT spraying, and polio practically vanished when DDT spraying stopped.

And you certainly can’t talk about the work of Dr. Andrew Kaufman or Dr. Tom Cowan… no, definitely don’t go there.

You’ve read Dissolving Illusions and many, many other well-documented pieces of literature on the history of those vaccines, and you know that the story of vaccines eradicating polio and smallpox is the adult version of believing in Vaccine Santa, the Vaccine Bunny, or the Vaccine Fairy.

You might be vaccine-injured like I am, or your kids may be vaccine-injured, but the other person thinks that your and your family’s suffering and unbearably high out-of-pocket medical expenses are worth it since they didn’t — or they think they didn’t — suffer any vaccine side effects.

So you tamp down your emotions one more time, and bifurcate the conversation.

Vaccine Conversation Bifurcation

Your conversation partner - like Beth or Bernie - only wants to talk about the benefits of vaccines.

You are talking about the harms. They cannot stay on topic.

You are having two different conversations and you don’t even realize it.

Your conversation partner is incapable of fixing this — it’s up to you.

You need to bifurcate the conversation.

How to Bifurcate “The” Vaccine Conversation

Them: “What about polio?”

You: “Listen, I’m going to join you in presuming the efficacy and benefits of vaccines, and we can presume they eradicated smallpox and polio, and that vaccines are going to stay on the market.”

Them: Really? I thought this was an anti-vaxxer who wants all vaccines to go away …

You: “And since I’m joining you in presuming the benefits, I need you to meet me halfway. Isn’t it important that the vaccines are also as safe as possible?”

Them: “Of course. They’ve all been safety tested.”

You: “Well, it turns out that the government has never adequately safety-tested vaccines. The best studies have been done by private researchers with private money.”

Them: “Certainly our government has done those studies.”

You: “They haven’t, but listen. If you’re open to starting this conversation, I will not talk about vaccine benefits or vaccine efficacy with you until you understand the harms. The conversation about harms doesn’t happen all at once. It happens little by little, sometimes over years. I am not trying to convince you to be anti-vaccine. I just want you to be open to the possibility of under-reported harms. Would you like me to recommend one thing to read or watch?”

The Result

When someone finally understands the harms, they realize that the potential for harm far outweighs any benefits.

You never end up talking about the benefits again.

You’ve had both conversations by focusing only on one.
